Social-Emotional Development
"Social-emotional development includes the child’s experience, expression, and management of emotions and the ability to establish positive and rewarding relationships with others (Cohen and others 2005). It encompasses both intra- and interpersonal processes" (California Department of Education, 2017, para 1).
To me this is one of the most important aspects of being a teacher. We see our students so often that it is our job to notice any shifts in personality, or behaviors and to make sure they are being educated in a safe and nurturing environment. According to Aimee Hosler “teachers must establish a classroom environment that promotes social and emotional development right from the start- their students long term success depends on it”
Here are some ways I work to provide a safe environment for my students
-
Smile with every student
-
Greet the students at the door
-
High fives on the way out
-
Listen to students concerns
-
Express genuine concern
-
Check in with them outside the classroom
"Close relationships with adults who provide consistent nurturance strengthen children’s capacity to learn and develop" (California Department of Education, 2017, para 10). I try to connect with my students so that they feel supported, but also so they feel they can come to me with any issues they are having.
When I teach my anti-bullying unit it brings about a lot of real emotions from my students. Although I bring this issue to light, my students feel alone and nervous in between the week we don't have class. Because of this I check in with students I notice issues with and bring any concerns I have to the school phycologist.
Although some teachers think that this is not a large issue in school, you can clearly see that it is by looking at the Padlet my students created expressing their emotions on the issue.
When lesson planning we need to consider the SED of each student and implement ways to protect and care for them. Watch this video of a 7th grade student named Jonah. Now imagine even one of your students goes home and feels this way. What would you do?
