Because the modern classroom is multicultural, we most likely have some students who are learning English for the first time. I see a lot of teachers just assume that because of language level these students are behind or are not capable of keeping up with the demands of the class. I remember my first day living in China and how scary it was just to go outside and get a coffee. So I can imagine how my students feel when they enter a English speaking classroom in a new country and feel pressure to keep up. If we don't acknowledge the difficulties they face we are not only leaving them behind, but we can also be hurting how they see themselves.

Culture and Language

What to do first!

Here are some examples that you can incorporate into your lessons to make ELL's feel comfortable and welcome. In addition your native English speakers learn some cultural diversity.

  • Play some cultural music

  • Learn your ELL students holiday's

  • Teach a "word of the week" in a language of one of your ELL students

  • Do a project that focuses on different student's cultures

  • Play a game that incorporates their language (see my example here ----------------------------------->

Acknowledging, celebrating and encouraging the use of our students’ home languages is just one of the many ways we can look at them through the lens of assets- and not deficits- that they bring to the learning process”(Feriazzo, L. 2017)
